Masonry Creme
The Ultimate Clear Protective Masonry External Wall Insulation Cream
Why use Eco Warm Walls’ External Wall Insulation Creme?
Damp provides the ability for heat to transfer. As walls get damp, it’s easier for heat to move through them. Additional internal insulation materials such as foam insulation or bead insulation are great at keeping your home warm and energy efficient but ONLY if they stay dry.
When exposed to driving rain, insulation materials may not dry out completely.
Our Storm Dry protective barrier prevents damp from even reaching the insulation material. It is kept dry, and does not easily transfer heat out of the walls.
Save Energy.
Keep the weather out and the warmth in.
The Storm Dry Masonry Creme can reduce water absorption by up to 95% and for as long as 25 years, even in driving rain. Applied to clay brickwork, this can reduce thermal transfer by 75%
Heat always moves from a warm surface to a colder surface.
If walls are cold and damp they will absorb warmth from inside the home. Your heating then has to compensate for this transfer by using more energy to maintain the desired temperature.
If, however, we keep the walls dry the heat cannot transfer as easily. It’s the same principle as making sure you never use damp oven gloves to remove a hot dish from the oven.
A surface treated with masonry cream will insulate mineral building materials by reducing water absorption. The masonry cream chemically bonds to the surface, penetrating up to 17mm to create an invisible insulation barrier.
Key features of the masonry cream include:
- For use on a range of substrates including brick, stone, concrete and sandstone
- Manufactured in the UK using the very latest, superior technology
- It has undergone UKAS Accredited testing
- Verified by the Energy Saving Trust
- One-coat masonry protection cream
Penetrates up to 17mm into the substrate to provide a clear insulation barrier - Chemically bonds to mineral surfaces

A Clear insulation barrier
The Storm Dry masonry cream creates a clear insulation barrier for single-skin buildings and those built with a cavity. It has been proven to help retain heat in walls and reduce heat loss.
UKAS accredited tests have demonstrated that by reducing water absorption of the walls, our masonry cream lead to thermal performance benefits. It has been proven to meet EAD 040083-00-0404.
In addition, testing in a hygrothermal chamber revealed that a wall coated in the masonry cream and subjected to repeated heat-rain conditions in accordance with EAD 090062-00-0404, resulted in reduced heat loss when compared with the uncoated (control) wall. The uncoated wall showed on average an increase of 6⁰C of heat loss in comparison to the walls coated with our Storm Dry Masonry Crème.
The clear coating improves thermal efficiency and contributes to lower energy consumption and lower energy bills, by keeping walls dry. Damp walls act as ‘thermal bridges’ – enabling heat to transfer from the inside out twice as quickly as it would if the walls remained dry.
Independent testing has shown that our Masonry Crème reduces water absorption by 96.3% and meets the British standard for water vapour resistance BS EN ISO 7783:2011.
Breathable
Our Masonry Crème does not restrict the ability of the building to breathe. Water vapour permeability testing was conducted in accordance with BS EN ISO 7783:2011 and it demonstrated that the coating had little effect on the water vapour diffusion of the substrate.
Application of our masonry cream protects the walls and cavities by keeping them dry whilst allowing air and moisture to escape. It maintains the important capability of the building envelope to breathe. Unlike some stone and brick sealer products, it does not block the pores of the masonry by coating them with a thin film. Therefore, the product is a highly breathable coating which helps to prevent penetrating damp.
Super Hydrophobic Coating
A surface is considered super hydrophobic if a water droplet beads up (with a contact angle greater than 140⁰ and the droplets can slide aware from the surface readily (it has a small contact angle hysteresis). Super hydrophobic surfaces repel water, causing it to form beads because it is more attracted to itself than the surface. This means water will run off the surface making it extremely difficult to wet.
This is known as the ‘lotus effect’ due to its similarity to the lotus leaf but is also seen on duck feathers and butterfly wings.
Substrates coated with the protective masonry cream will respond in the same way – water will form droplets and won’t penetrate the substrate. Independent testing has shown that it reduces water absorption by 96.3% and meets the British standard for water vapour resistance BS EN ISO 7783:2011.
Prevent & Protect
Let your walls clean themselves.
Our masonry creme is so hydrophobic, dirt cannot gain enough friction to stick to the wall. This makes your walls self cleaning.
Not only does masonry creme help to improve energy efficiency, it also protects the wall surface and slows down the ageing process of the building.
By diminishing water absorption, our clear masonry cream has been proven to reduce soluble salts migrating from bricks and mortar thereby preventing unsightly deposits of salt efflorescence. Whilst salt efflorescence is generally considered an aesthetic problem, it does have the potential to cause structural damage, such as the erosion of mortar joints, known as sulphate attack.
In contrast to our coloured exterior wall coating, the masonry cream does not alter the appearance of the building, it helps to maintain and protect the natural beauty of the masonry;
- It mimics the lotus leaf by creating a super hydrophobic, self-cleaning surface. Dirt particles are unable to obtain a hold on treated surfaces and will simply flow off with rainfall.
- The growth of moss, algae and lichens is deterred.
- Slows the ageing or breakdown of the surface of the building by helping to protect it from the damaging effects of the weather including wind driven rain, frost, high air humidity and sea salt penetrated air.
- Performance is unaffected by UV rays
Proven Performance
Our Masonry Crème has undergone independent tests by UKAS certified body Lucideon and has been proven to meet the following standards;
- EAD 040083-00-0404 – 25 year hygrothermal performance
- EAD 090062-00-0404 – external thermal insulation composite
- BS EN ISO 7783 – 2011 – water vapour diffusion
- BS EN ISO 12572 – water vapour resistance

We take pride in ensuring that all preparatory steps are carried out to the highest standard so that the masonry creme can give you as much benefit as possible. Read more about our installation process here.
1: Survey
Check the condition of all outside walls.
2: Cleaning
By removing all the dirt, mould, stains and flaky paint we can quickly see where repairs need to be made to give the best possible surface for the treatment to bond to.
3: Moss and Algae Prevention
Any moss, lichens or algae are treated to remove their roots and spores, and ultimately preventing them from being able to grow back.
4: Initial Repair to Cracks
We meticulously work to remove any loose material from cracks in the walls and then fill them using an exceptionally high-quality filler. This gives us the best possible surface, free from debris.
5: Repairs to Render
Damaged render is removed and then replaced to ensure a uniformed, matched surface.
6: Bagging
Poor quality and unpainted surfaces undergo additional treatment to provide phenomenal stabilisation
7: Primer Coat
Our dedicated primer is applied. This gives the best possible surface for the teatment to adhere to and helps give the treament its long lifespan
6: Coating Application
Finally, the hydrophobic, energy-saving coating is applied! This is either invisible or if one of our facade coatings is being used, it is to your chosen colour and texture.
